RESISTING THE TUG OF TEMPTATION

Have you ever found yourself at a crossroads, facing a temptation that seems overwhelming? In those moments, it’s as if a battle rages within us, tugging us toward desires that lead us away from God’s purpose. Temptation is a universal experience, but as believers, we have been given a powerful tool to overcome it: submission to God. In James 4:7, we discover a profound truth that can reshape our approach to temptation and equip us to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy.

Submission: An Act of Surrender

James invites us to “submit yourselves, then, to God.” Submit means to “place oneself under.” When we submit, we humbly come before God recognizing the need for his power and strength to overcome temptation. Through submission, we acknowledge His wisdom and seek His guidance in every aspect of our lives. Just as a soldier follows the orders of a commanding officer, we align our will with God’s divine plan.

Resisting the Enemy: Unveiling Spiritual Warfare

In the second part of the verse, we are urged to “resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Here, we unveil the spiritual warfare that surrounds us. Satan, our adversary, uses enticing tactics to distract and divert us from our faith walk. Don’t underestimate Satan. He’s smarter and stronger than you and has been roaming the earth for millennia. So how do we resist him? The same way Jesus did when he was tempted in the wilderness. Through the living Word, scripture. Matthew 4:1-11 tells us the devil tempted Jesus in the wilderness after he fasted 40 days and 40 nights. Satan pounced when Jesus was in a vulnerable and weakened state. Yet, each time Satan tempted Jesus to give in to a desire, Jesus countered with God’s word and remained obedient to His heavenly father. His example teaches us that submission and resistance go hand in hand, creating a shield against the enemy’s schemes. In the same manner, let us resist, armed with the truth of God’s Word and the power of the Holy Spirit, the enemy will flee.

Arming Ourselves with God’s Word

God’s Word is a powerful weapon against the enemy’s lies. By immersing ourselves in Scripture, meditating on its truth, and hiding it in our hearts, we equip ourselves to resist temptation. Hebrews 4:12 says, “For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” As such, each time the devil tempted Jesus, He responded with the Word of God. Likewise, we can stand firm against the enemy’s attacks when we know and apply God’s Word.

Seek Support

We are not meant to fight battles alone. Surrounding ourselves with fellow believers who share our desire to honor God can provide a support system in our journey of resisting temptation. As 1 Thessalonians 5:11 states, “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.” Accountability partners can encourage, pray for, and challenge us to remain steadfast in our commitment to submit to God. Together, we can celebrate victories and find strength in times of weakness.

Walking In Victory

In closing, as believers, we are not defenseless against the tug of temptation. James 4:7 calls us to submit to God and resist the devil, promising the enemy will flee from us. This truth empowers us to live victoriously, navigating life’s challenges with faith and confidence. Just as a ship submits to its skilled captain and a soldier resists the enemy’s advances, we, too, can find strength through submission and victory through resistance.
