Do you believe that you can grow spiritually on your own, or do you need the support and encouragement of others? This same dilemma faced by Jewish Christians in the early church continues to plague modern Christians today. With advancements in the internet, social media, and video, far too many Christians have chosen not to participate in a local church. Still, the writer of Hebrews encourages us to have a far more urgent attitude about Christian life and fellowship with other believers.
Historical Background:
The Book of Hebrews was written for Jewish Christians facing persecution and struggling to maintain their faith. In this letter, the author emphasizes the superiority of Christ over the Old Testament system and urges his readers to persevere in their faith despite the challenges they face.
The Message of Hebrews 10:24-25:
Verse 24: “And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works” This means we should intentionally encourage and support one another in our spiritual growth.
Verse 25: “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some” Emphasizes the importance of gathering together with other believers for worship and fellowship.
“But exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching” Means that we should encourage one another more as we approach Christ’s return.
Understanding the importance of community and gathering together with other believers can be incredibly beneficial for followers of Christ. It reminds us that we are not alone in our faith journey and that we need the support and encouragement of others. It also provides opportunities to serve and encourage others, which can deepen our spiritual growth.
Consider:
Gathering Together
During Covid, David had become accustomed to watching Church services from the comfort of his home. He occasionally read the Bible and felt like he could navigate his spiritual journey on his own. David rationalized that church “attendance” could mean sitting on the couch or going in person as long as he received the message.
One day, David stumbled upon Hebrews 10:24-25 and was struck by the phrase “not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.” He realized that he needed to take advantage of the power of community and the support and encouragement of other believers.
With this newfound perspective, David decided to return to church and start engaging with fellow church members. He found that being surrounded by other believers gave him a sense of belonging and purpose in his faith journey. He also found that by gathering together, he was able to be both encouraged and an encourager to others.
Through this experience, David learned the truth of Hebrews 10:24-25 and the power of gathering together with other believers. He was able to reignite his passion for his faith and find joy in the community of believers who were running the race with him.
