EXHORTATIONS OF FAITH // New Believer Bible Study Lesson

Everyone faces challenges in life. From work to family, friends, and everything else in between. But how do we navigate through challenges and tough times while remaining in the will of God? The Apostle Paul knew. It’s essential that we understand the significance of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 and how it can impact our walk with Christ.

Historical Background:

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of 1 Thessalonians to the church in Thessalonica. Thessalonica was a bustling city in modern-day Greece, and the church in Thessalonica comprised mainly of Gentile converts to Christianity. In his letter, Paul encouraged the church to remain faithful amid persecution and live in a way that was pleasing to God.

The Message of 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18:

“Rejoice always” Means that we should have joy and gladness in our hearts, no matter our circumstances.

“Pray without ceasing” Emphasizes the importance of maintaining a constant attitude of prayer and dependence on God throughout our daily lives.

“Give thanks in all circumstances” Means that we should be grateful to God, even in difficult situations, recognizing that He is in control and has a plan for our lives.

As new believers, following these commands can have several benefits. Rejoicing always can help us maintain a positive attitude and focus on God’s goodness, even in hard times. Praying without ceasing can help us grow closer to God and experience His presence daily. Giving thanks in all circumstances can help us develop an attitude of gratitude and trust in God, knowing that He is working all things together for our good.

Consider:

A believer named James had recently come to faith in Jesus Christ and struggled to maintain his joy and gratitude amid his busy and stressful life. James’s job was very demanding, and as a result, he frequently faced the anger of his supervisor.

One day, following a lengthy meeting, James spoke with a co-worker named Tony, who had been a Christian for many years. Tony shared with James the importance of rejoicing always, praying without ceasing, and giving thanks in all circumstances.

Tony told James about a time when he had lost his job and struggled to make ends meet. Despite the difficult circumstances, he chose to rejoice in the Lord and trust that He had a plan for his life. He prayed continuously, seeking God’s guidance and wisdom, and gave thanks for the blessings he still had in his life.

His co-worker’s story inspired James, and he began implementing the scripture verse. He chose to rejoice in the Lord, even when things were hard. He prayed throughout the day, seeking God’s guidance and comfort, and gave thanks for the blessings he had in his life.

As James put these commands into practice, he noticed a change in his attitude and outlook on life. He felt more connected to God and grew in his faith and trust in Him. He also found that his relationships with others improved as he approached them with a spirit of joy and gratitude.
