CHILDREN ARE A HERITAGE FROM GOD // Topical Readings Bible Study Lesson

As beautifully expressed in Psalm 127:3-5, children are a divine heritage and blessing from the Lord, precious gifts entrusted to us by our heavenly Father. These young lives, full of potential and promise, are like arrows in the hands of a warrior, ready to be guided and directed toward a purposeful and meaningful future. As parents and caregivers, we have the privilege and responsibility to nurture, teach, and raise them according to God’s principles, instilling deep-rooted faith and a solid moral compass. In doing so, we honor God and contribute to shaping a generation that will positively impact the world and further the Kingdom of God. Let us rejoice in the blessing of children and embrace our role in their lives as stewards of God’s love and grace.

Psalm 127:3-5 is a beautiful passage that emphasizes the value of children as a blessing from God and the importance of raising them according to His principles.

Historical Background:

Psalm 127 is one of the fifteen “Songs of Ascents” in the Book of Psalms. Pilgrims sang these songs as they journeyed to Jerusalem for the annual feasts. The psalm is attributed to King Solomon and reflects the wisdom literature of the time. In ancient Israel, children were considered a source of joy and a sign of God’s favor and provision.

The Message of Psalm 127:3-5:

Verse 3: “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.” This verse highlights the value of children as a blessing and a gift from God, emphasizing their importance in the family and society.

Verse 4:  “Like arrows in the hands of a warrior are children born in one’s youth.” This metaphor compares children to arrows, highlighting their potential to significantly impact the world when guided and directed by their parents.

Verse 5:  “Blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them. They will not be put to shame when they contend with their opponents in court.”

This verse emphasizes the blessing and joy that come from having a large family and the sense of security and support that children can provide to their parents.

A Gift from God

In the bustling city of Philadelphia, a loving couple named Joanne and James longed for the blessing of children. Years of trying to conceive left them disheartened and questioning their faith. Despite their struggles, they continued to seek solace and comfort in the teachings of the Bible, particularly Psalm 127:3-5.

One Sunday morning, as they sat in the back pew of their church, Pastor Thomas shared a powerful sermon about the value of children as a heritage from the Lord and the importance of raising them according to His principles. As the words of Psalm 127 echoed through the sanctuary, Joanne and James felt renewed hope and purpose.

In the following weeks, the couple decided to explore the possibility of adoption, believing God had placed this desire in their hearts. After months of prayerful consideration and countless meetings with social workers, Joanne and James were introduced to a sibling group of three, who had been waiting for a loving home.

From the moment they met, Joanne and James knew these children were meant to be a part of their family. They opened their hearts and home to the siblings, embracing them with unconditional love and support. As they guided their children through the challenges of adjusting to a new life, they diligently taught them about God’s love and grace, instilling a strong faith foundation.

Over time, Joanne and James’ quiver of love grew as they welcomed two more adopted children into their family, each a unique and precious gift from God. Joanne and James became a testament to the transformative power of faith and love through their unwavering commitment to raising their children according to biblical principles.

Once filled with silence and longing, their home now resounded with laughter and joy as their children flourished under their care. The once-empty rooms were now filled with the sounds of bedtime prayers, Bible stories, and hymns of praise.

As the years passed, Joanne and James watched with pride as their children grew into robust, compassionate individuals who positively impacted their community. Their once-broken hearts were now overflowing with gratitude for the abundant blessings God had bestowed upon them.

Through their journey, Joanne and James discovered the profound truth of Psalm 127:3-5 – that children are indeed a heritage from the Lord, and the blessings they bring are immeasurable. By embracing God’s plan for their family, they had found purpose, joy, and a love that knew no bounds.
