FAITH OVER FEAR // Going Deeper, Growing Stronger Bible Study Lesson

We all have fears, whether it’s fear of snakes, fear of clowns, fear of failure, or fear of missing out. But what happens when we allow fear to hinder our faith journey, and more importantly, how can we overcome it? The Apostle Paul considered these challenges when he selected his meek and mild-mannered protégé Timothy to lead the church in Ephesus. Despite the outlook, Paul encouraged Timothy to be strong and walk in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Historical Background:

The Apostle Paul wrote the book of 2 Timothy to his young disciple Timothy. It was written during a time of persecution, and Paul encouraged Timothy to stand firm in his faith and continue preaching the Gospel despite the challenges he would face.

The Message of 2 Timothy 1:7:

“For God has not given us a spirit of fear” Means that fear does not come from God but is a tool of the enemy to hinder our spiritual growth.

“But of power” Refers to the power of the Holy Spirit that resides within us as believers, giving us strength and courage to face any obstacle.

“And of love” Means that God’s love for us and our love for Him should be the driving force behind all we do.

“And of a sound mind” Means that we should have a clear and focused mind centered on God’s will for our lives.

Understanding the power that God has given us and the absence of fear can be incredibly beneficial for believers. It reminds us that we can trust God’s faithfulness to guide us through any challenge. It also encourages us to live in a way characterized by love and soundness of mind.

Consider:

Faith over Fear

Rachel, a new believer, had always struggled with fear and anxiety. She was constantly worried about what others thought of her and felt she could never measure up to the expectations of those around her.

One Sunday, Rachel attended a Women’s bible study and listened intently as the speaker discussed 2 Timothy 1:7. Rachel was struck by the phrase, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” She realized she had been allowing fear to control her life and needed to trust God’s power and love to overcome it.

With this newfound perspective, Rachel surrendered her fears to God and trusted His faithfulness to guide her in every situation. Her worries faded as she leaned into God’s power, love, and soundness of mind.

Through this experience, Rachel learned the truth of 2 Timothy 1:7 and the power that God has given us as believers. She discovered that she could live a life characterized by confidence, courage, and peace, knowing that God was with her every step of the way.
